Here are some very detailed instructions that have been designed to help you modify your Playstation as
quickly as possible. In order to begin your modification you will need the following:
A soldering iron with a fine tip and solder (we send you super thin solder, use it!)
A philips head screwdriver
Now that we have the materials we are ready to modify the Playstation!
1. Disconnect all power and A/V cords from your PS2. Ensure all devices including memory cards, controllers,
compact discs and/or DVD’s are removed from the system.
2. Turn your PS2 upside down and remove all eight screw caps (4 rubber and 4 plastic). These caps cover the
PS2 assembly screws. Pry the caps off gently using a small flat head screw driver. Note: Four of the eight case
screws are 2 1/2” in length, and all screws must be re-used in their appropriate holes only.
3. After you have removed all 8 of the case screws, you will need to turn the PS2 right-side-up and remove
the top cover. Lift the top cover of the PS2 case up and away from the exposed controller ports and drive
tray on the front of the console. Important: The top of the PS2 is attached to the bottom via a thin ribbon
cable which connects to the Reset/Eject switch. Ensure not to damage or remove this ribbon cable when
removing the PS2 top.
 


4. The next step is to remove the Reset/Eject switch assembly from the top cover of the PS2. Gently pull the
plastic switch assembly free from the PS2 top cover, ensuring not to damage the thin ribbon cable.

5. Now you will need to locate and remove the 2 brass colored screws securing the main power (rocker
style switch located on rear of PS2) switch and cooling fan assembly as well as the 2 screws securing the
controller port assembly. Only remove these 4 screws and leave the switch, fan and controller port assembly
in the chassis.

6. Carefully turn the entire PS2 unit over so that the bottom is facing upwards. Important: Take care to
ensure that the switch, fan and controller port assemblies do not drop out of the chassis when turning the
unit over. Now gently remove the PS2 bottom cover and this will reveal the power supply.
7. Locate and remove the 4 brass colored screws securing the PS2 power supply mainboard to the chassis.
 
8. Gently lift the entire power supply mainboard assembly up and out of the PS2 chassis, and disconnect the
the wire harness connecting the power supply to the main power switch at the power supply mainboard.
9. Now remove the expansion bay cover (back of PS2) and the bottom of the expansion bay cage. Carefully
remove the flat plastic shield located on top of the heavy metal shield covering the PS2 mainboard.
10. Very carefully remove the main power switch and fan assembly from the PS2 chassis. Important: Take
extreme care when removing the fan assembly. Prior to removing the fan assembly you must unplug the
fan from the mainboard.
11. Locate and remove the 9 small precision screws securing the metal shield covering the PS2 mainboard.
Once you have removed all of these screws gently turn the entire PS2 chassis over (right-side-up).
 
12. Locate and remove the final screw securing the metal shield covering the PS2 mainboard to the chassis.
Now you can turn the PS2 over again and remove the heavy metal shield to reveal the PS2 mainboard.
 
13. Now you can turn the PS2 over again and remove the heavy metal shield to reveal the PS2 mainboard.
CAUTION: Due to the heat involved in soldering, you must only hold the iron tip on the pad to be soldered
for enough time to allow the solder to flow. If too much heat is applied to the contact it may damage the
chip, lift a PCB trace or burn insulation back on the wire. If you burn the insulation off of the wire, trim and
re-solder the connection. Removing too much insulation could result in the exposed copper wire touching
other traces on the board. This is hazardous to the PlayStation2 unit.
IMPORTANT: Once all of the wires are attached, visually inspect the board to ensure that none of your
retouched solder pads are touching any adjacent traces, that there is no excess solder on the board and all
connections are clean and tight. Carefully re-solder any contacts that you suspect may not be making a clean
connection. You can now tape the ModChip on the board in a clear area where it will not be damaged.
After double-checking all connections, follow the above steps in reverse order to re-assemble the PlayStation2.
Once you have completely re-assembled the unit, plug in your power source and video outputs. Power up
the PlayStation2. Test the unit FIRST with an original game.
